What a puzzle
[12:00 am]

The following one made me sick! But there a more of them at highiqsociety.org.

Chris loves the girl who is in love with Don. Jim loves the girl who loves the man who loves Gillian. Tom loves the girl who loves the man who loves Justine. Kim does not love Tom. Alice loves a man who does not love Kim. Who loves Justine?

3 Years anniversary
[12:00 am]

3 Years ago:
· I told Sofia to be strong and to come to visit me soon.
· I was holding the tears, because I wasn't that strong.
· I was wondering how a big machine manages to fly over The Atlantic Ocean.
· I was looking forward to see my family again.
· "Huh, it is cold here, and windy."
· I spoke to people in a strange mix of German and English.
· "Mmmm, Muffins."
· "This is a loonie, and this is a dime, and this is a quarter . . ."
· "Why do I have to wash my clothes in the basement?"
· They drove us in those funny yellow school buses, I saw only in movies.
· "So, this is the CN Tower, and this is the Toronto skyline."
· I was laughing at those huge American seventies cars.
· I came to Canada.

Forrest Gump

Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get.
[Forrest Gump]

Life is like a box of chocolates. However, it may contain traces of nuts.
[I don't know who said this, but it is funny]

BTW, I watched Forrest Gump about 8 times and think I could see it again.

Marjan the Lion dies
[12:00 am]

Do you remember Marjan the Lion?

Marjan the lion, who reigned regally at the Kabul Zoo during 23 years of war and cruelty, knew only a few weeks of peace and kindness before being found dead in his cage Saturday morning. More at Yahoo :-(

Oh my God, I didn't mean that!

W3C Patent Policy
[12:00 am]

W3C Patent Policy Working Group has published Current Patent Practice as a W3C note. I have no idea what they mean by all of this. Long documents confuse me! Can't we just build our pages and not worry about this stuff?
head lemur shed some light on this topic in his article No RAND for Me.

Wayback Machine
[12:00 am]

Wayback Machine is a great application that makes it possible to surf pages stored in the Internet Archive's web archive. It "lets you surf the web as it was".
But, how does it work?

Washing machines are not allowed in apartments under any circumstances due to electrical and plumbing restrictions. Here is what you find in you water sink when your neighbours break this rule. Svarog, I know it wasn't you ;-)

PayPal
[12:00 am]

In an effort to find some independent information about PayPal, a service that accepts payments online, I came across the site called paypalwarning.com. and it is worth mentioning in case you want to try their service. I don't have any experience with PayPal, but after checking the site above, I think it's better so.

Yahoo presents premium document search. According to their description, prices for most documents range from $1 to $4.
Are we in the dawn of a new period of Internet searching? Will we have to pay to get a valuable information? I only hope, this model will prove ineffective, I really do. Just imagine, you have to pay Google! I can't.

Referrer Logs
[12:00 am]

Checking my referrer logs has always been an easy way to find lovely websites. Thanks SODA!

But then again, referrer logs won't tell you always, why your website traffic suddenly goes crazy. I had to discover the mystery on my own. If it is not from a web site, it must come from an e-mail program. We have been linked on Evolt list by Rudy as an example of the site that features "style changing". Thanks Rudy! Funny enough, Rudy lives just a couple of blocks west from where I live.

Putting the styles in the order
[12:00 am]

There are things you learn every day. One of those is the importance of putting the styles in the order link-visited-hover-active. The article is written by a guy who obviously knows his stuff.
I am changing the order here as we speak, just in case.

The TOP500 lists the 500 most powerful commercially available computer systems known.
Gimme me one of those, I have enough space in my bedroom!
ASCI White leads the list. Would you know how to insert the floppy in that one?

Photoshop, Docking well
[12:00 am]

Photoshop Tip:
What is the strange looking, shaded, rectangular area on the right side of the Options bar? In order to see it you must have your monitor resolutions more than 800 pixels wide. Most of us know that we can dock palettes to each other, but the fact that we can dock the palettes to that mysterious area in the Options bar called Docking well seems to remain hidden. I like to drag less frequently used palettes over there, but it is up to you, what you'll do with that.

Common HTML validating problems
[12:00 am]

I know many people know them already, but just in case WDG gives us a list of common problems that we encounter when validating our pages. Ampersand (&) in URLs is a tricky one. I had to write a function that replaces & with & in the URLs that I post here, because I am too lazy or I forget to change them every time.

Java, C++, C, or what?
[12:00 am]

I wonder what programming language is being used to create applications we use daily, such as Photoshop, Flash, Word, browsers . . . I googled a couple of minutes, but wasn't able to find anything. Is it Java, C++ or something else? Is that information available to the public at all, or is it kept secret?

Touching UNIX for the first time
[12:00 am]

"Why and How of Web Standards" - a terrific reading.

For the first time in my life I was actively sitting on a UNIX machine, which is situated in a lab of my university. The company that I work for has a UNIX machine, but I never go close to it because otherwise I would break it.
What are my first impressions?
At the beginning, I think, the computer ignored me completely and responded with a BEEP on any input coming from myself. Then I discovered a miracle command CTRL + D and the world of UNIX was much closer to me.
Despite of the fact that I was looking like a moron I think I learned a lot yesterday. I even created a page using a program called "pico" and checked my mail using a program called "pine".
One thing I hate though. I was able to use Netscape 4x only to browse the internet. There are no other browsers installed (or I don't know how to find them). I am not talking about IE of course.

Shockwave Flash virus?
[12:00 am]

Sophos Anti-Virus warns about a new virus SWF/LFM-926 which is capable of infecting Shockwave Flash (.SWF) files.

The virus makes use of the ability of Shockwave files to run scripts. In this case it opens a DOS box, launching the command line interpreter to run a debug script which produces a file called V.COM. This file, which is 926 bytes in length, is then automatically run by the virus infecting all other SWF files in the current directory.

2001 YB5
[12:00 am]

A recently discovered asteroid named 2001 YB5 raced past our planet today only two times farther away than the Moon. Huh.

It is a well known fact that search engines don't (or do, but very poorly) index pages containing the ? (question mark) symbol in their URL. This is the only sashadesign.com dynamically generated page that shows up at Google so far. But now, I am puzzled a little bit. Why only this page? What is the difference? Any reason or pure coincidence?

Learing Java, doing some ASP

class myfirstjavacourse

public static void main(String args[])
{
York.println("I go to my first Java course tonight!");
}
}

It may seem insane to you, but I spent about 5 - 6 hours tweaking around the photos section. My goal is to create a small admin tool, so that I don't have to use FTP client in order to upload images, create directories or add/update/delete photos descriptions . . . or anything else. No FTP client at all.
It's 2:30 AM. I go to sleep now before this turns out to be some sort of a diary of an insomniac.

Website traffic during the holidays
[12:00 am]

During the holidays I had about 50% less website traffic then usual. Does that mean most people surf during their working hours? Today it is getting better already, which obviously proves my theory.
I am sure everybody is still looking for the ways to cure a hangover. Despite immoderate wine consumption, I think I feel pretty good. After all Tarapaca seems to be a good Chilean wine, and I didn't mix it with anything else.

I am a Google fun, am I?
[12:00 am]

Have you ever seen Google interface displayed in Arabic? I saw it for the first time through my referrer logs and was really amazed with that weird "everything from right to left" look (IE/Win displays even scrollbars on the left side).
I got a bit interested how it works and learned about the DIR attribute that I have never used before. Good to know that it exists.

Google Mousepad

Yes, I am a Google fan, I admit it and I am sure you discovered it so far. Buy me this Google mousepad whenever you feel like giving me a gift ;-)
A mug would do too.
