Adam and I had lots of fun with this:
There is a correspondence chess tournament going on at the OzoneAsylum. We picked up stansco.com as a host of our games. They have a beautiful and powerful engine that runs everything. There is one problem though. I would like to see all our games on one place instead of going to each page separately. For example, I am playing here, DocOzone is playing here, and so on . . . but what if I want to see them all at once? Well, this question was a starting point of our little project. Here is what we came up with [caution, Java Applet ahead]. Each game is generated on the fly. How did we do that. Just guess!

Bottle-opening robot
Nice thing, isn't it?
Bottle openers will retire soon, heh. I guess, we will wait a couple of months until we see its brothers opening wine bottles.

Forms without submit buttons, how is that? I am building a page and somehow "submit button" doesn't fit to the overall design. I am talking mainly about the form that has just one text field.
When submitting a form what do you usually do, hit "submit button" on the screen or "enter" on your key board? I personally use the latter, because it's faster. Do you think it is stupid to leave out the "submit button" like I did here for the blog search.

Screw Netscape 4.x! How many times did you say this phrase?
However, it often happens that we still have to design for this ancient browser. In that case, take a look at the list of the CSS Tags Fully Supported by Netscape 4.x [via Glish].
A very nice summary.

How To Write Unmaintainable Code
I had lots of fun reading this essay. Of course, don't take it literally.
PowerToys for WinXP are back. TweakUI is my favorite.

Just got back from the Java exam. It went OK, but I am not fully satisfied. Most of the questions were on Algorithms and Arrays, which I, to some extend neglected during my preparation. It is always the same thing with me, I learn much better when I don't have to study for exams, test and others.
Oh, Happy Earth Day!

Asylum Google-bomb project!
We want to come up first on Google when searching for "Mad Scientists". Everything that needs to be done is linking: Mad Scientists.
God is the best example of Google bombing so far :-)

I am building a PHP/mySql/Apache/Unix web site for a client and I must admit, I love this combination.
I have also discovered a neat thing. You can use your MS Access database on your home computer to manage an online mySql database. I didn't know that. My hosting company provides a little tutorial that covers this.
I dare to promise you, in a couple of months from here, you won't be seeing any .asp extensions at sashaDesign.com.

Our final exam is scheduled for Monday. I am kind of nervous. I feel, I haven't covered everything and the D-day is coming closer and closer.
Why do I have to do this to myself in my thirties?

Win-XP Search Assistant silently downloads files.
Just over a week ago, while searching for a file on a Windows-XP machine, I was surprised to see the Search Assistant attempting to activate my Internet connection. It puzzled me because I wasn't searching the Internet, only my local drive. I was busy with other things at the time, but I made a mental note to look into it soon, which I promptly forgot to do.
Hm?!

Some things, so many times forgotten. Very good:
Changing the colour of the scrollbar, changing the desktop image, changing the panel/taskbar colours, changing the colour of the title bar, changing the functionality of the title bar's buttons (menu, minimize, maximize/restore, shade, close) are the job of the user, *not* the designer.

Horizontal rule using CSS (I think it is neat):
.hrule
{
border-bottom: 1px #000 solid;
}
HTML predefined icon-like symbols is an interesting idea, just imagine you type &caution; in your HTML code, and you get something like the image on the right side.

A new study says Canadians are more wired than Americans, . . .
I've always been fascinated with the The 5K project. This year's competition should be open for entries very soon. If I get some time I may be able to participate.
I've just found a similar concept at 256 byte Minimalistic HTML Competition. Lots of interesting ideas can be found over there.

As a small exercise for me, I am building this site in PHP and MySQL on Apache. The same look and feel but different technology. I'll give it a try. Tweaking around my own site has always been the best way to learn.

I bet, you've noticed weird things going on here in the last two days!
If you're looking at this right now, you are most likely on my home computer :-)
I am transfering the site to a new server. While on my home computer, everything may be a bit slower until the DNS change have propagated through the Internet completely.
Why slower? Because it is a cable connection, upload is slower, but also because I have a couple of processor intense programs opened at the moment :-)
Stop hacking!
Server troubles are nothing compared to the one of the most terrifying days in my life.
