FirstPhrase spam
[07:29 pm]

Spam sent to one of my clients, who asked me for opinion.

Did you know that if I type in a KEYWORD using the Netscape, or Explorer browser I could be immediately sent to YOUR WEB SITE! I would not get a long list of companies to choose from, I would be connected directly to your website! Our technology can do this for you. Type in pizza on your browser and you'll get the Pizza Hut Web Site. Type in the word, credit and you ll get the Master Card web site. This is our technology at work! Would you like to explore the possibilities for your web site? If so, please call me before someone else gets the word or phrase that's best for your business!!

If they could do that as easily as they promise, their name would probably be Microsoft and not FirstPhrase(.com). The catch is, the only people who would visit your site are those who have their "plugin" installed and their browsers hijacked, as somebody explained it already.

By the way, typing Pizza in the address bar didn't work for me, I always get MSN results. I didn't bother looking in my browser setup, because I use Google Toolbar, which is now available for Mozilla users as well.

Well, let's mention Pizza for the third time today. Don't you find this pathetic?

I bought two books today
[12:12 am]

The Complete Manual of Typography.
Typography is an intersting topic and this book is covering it in depth.

ActionScript for Flash MX: The Definitive Guide, Second Edition.
I need to keep up with Davor ;-)
I didn't dig through the book yet, but here is what I found interesting:The animal on the cover is a siren, a particular type of salamander found in North American freshwater habitats. Salamanders are amphibians with tails; they diverged from other amphibian species (including frogs) early in amphibian evolution . . .

Now, how does this relate to Flash and ActionScript :-)? I thought it was Proteus anguinus (we call it "human fish"), endemic specie living in the caves along the Mediterranean Sea. I saw it once!

Google-watch.com, Salon.com
[11:20 pm]

Via SlashdotGoogle-watch.com is presenting a list of nine complaints about (almost) everybody's favorite search engine.

Is the End Near for Salon.com?
One of the best online magazines out there seems to be in financial trouble. If the worst happens, I'll definitely miss them. No, no, it won't happen.

Opera Bork
[04:12 pm]

Opera releases "Bork" edition

Two weeks ago it was revealed that Microsoft's MSN portal targeted Opera users, by purposely providing them with a broken page. As a reply to MSN's treatment of its users, Opera Software today released a very special Bork edition of its Opera 7 for Windows browser. The Bork edition behaves differently on one Web site: MSN. Users accessing the MSN site will see the page transformed into the language of the famous Swedish Chef from the Muppet Show: Bork, Bork, Bork!

Last Modified favelet. Just drag the link to your favorites. I wrote this one :-) I can write simple things like this. Not very useful for dynamic pages because they will always return the current time. On the other hand, it can be useful on some old html pages.

Web Style Sheets home page redesign
[12:09 am]

Web Style Sheets home page gets a new look. Make sure to check the DOCTYPE declaration on that page. It is kind of funny.

Arial or Helvetica? I scored 8/10. Huh.
After the quiz, make sure to read the articles mentioned at the botton of the page. I linked to one of those long time ago.

MySqlFront
[11:18 am]

For some reason I have always used phpMyAdmin to manage MySql databases. I knew about MySqlFront, but never used it. Today, I installed MySqlFront on my home computer and I must admit that it is really great. Too bad the program was suspended in September 2002. Why, why, why?

MySQL RAND()
[11:31 pm]

Korax, my hosting company has updated MySQL and a few other things recently. There is one thing I noticed. I might be wrong, but selecting a random row via following does not work in the new version of MySQL?!

SELECT * FROM your_table ORDER BY RAND() LIMIT 1;

However:

SELECT * FROM your_table ORDER BY RAND(NOW()) LIMIT 1;

fixed the thing, but I am not happy with the random results.

A comment at mysql.com shed some light on this issue.
