GIF pronunciation pageThe GIF graphics file format was invented by CompuServe in 1987. In the decade since, a debate has been raging as to the correct way to pronounce "GIF": like "jif", or with a hard "g" as in "gift" as a majority of Mac users seem to prefer.
I am not a Mac user but I pronounce it with a hard "g".

Yeah, I'm no expert, but fwiw, I pronouce it as in "gift" as well. "Jiff" is a cleaning fluid.

Sasha,
apologies for the multiple posts. I was using Mozilla 1.0, and I've the same problem with that browser since it was released - every time I push a button, the damn thing submits 10 times.
Any suggested fixes welcome.

Heh, I was surprized to see so many scrawls. No problem Maxwell. Mozilla is playing jokes with you. Like with any other animal, you have to be very cautious with it. Are you feeding it regularly?
Jiff is also peanut butter.

Sasha,
yes, I feed it regularly, like my cat.....
I guess it's not called The Lizard for nuthin'....
But Care and Feeding Of Reptiles should not be such a delicate subject...
And it's *still* the best browser I've used.
D

You might try http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/. Maybe there is an explanation of your problem.

GIF = Graphics Interchange Format. "Graphics" is pronounced with the hard "g" (as in "gift") so it only follows, at least in my mind, that the "g" in "gif" should also have the hard "g".
Or, to be less nice about it, only amateurs pronounce it "jif" ... hehehehe!

I heard somewhere that Unisys (the punks who have the patent) pronounce it "jiff," but it sounds wrong that way. I say 'giff' because it's a cut-off acronym dating back to that Winblows 8.3 file-naming scheme. It's actually Graphics (or Graphical) Interchange File Format. It's still called that on Mac image utilities.
