Check out the XHTML 2.0 Working Draft
This document is the first public working draft of this specification. It should in no way be considered stable, and should not be referenced for any purposes whatsoever. This version does not include the implementations of XHTML 2.0 in either DTD or XML Schema form. Those will be included in subsequent versions, once the contents of this language stabilizes.
Looks like some interesting news are coming:
- BR is finally deprecated. There's now a line element to take its place.
- Navigation lists are intended to be used to define collections of selectable items for presentation in a "navigation" menu.
- Instead of the IMG tag, we will be using OBJECT tag! As it looks like.
- The dfn element contains the defining instance of the enclosed term.
- The section element, in conjunction with the h element offers a mechanism for structuring documents into sections.

... and support for xhtml 2 in browsers would be implemented by 2010. :)

What's so bad about BR or IMG ?
It even makes sense:
break = br
image = img

Why would they replace IMG with OBJECT tag?
I guess, object tag is more flexible. In an IMG tag you can stick an image only, in an object tag you will be able to stick an image but also some alternative media such as MPEG, SWF, . . . I like the idea.
From the structural point of view LINE tag makes more sense as opposed to BR.

I guess OBJECT makes sense then.. but LINE still doesn't
instead of four characters now: <br>
we'll have to type 13. I call that loss of productivity ;o)

<line> gives you more power than <br />
All elements that don't have closing tag will be deprecated.

I was wondering why img tage was implemented at all when I have discovered object model with swf and java applets...

Well, <IMG> element was introduced in HTML 2.0
http://ftp.ics.uci.edu/pub/ietf/html/rfc1866.txt
and HTML 4.0 introduces the <OBJECT> element
