Photoshop, Burn and Dodge tool

I read a funny photoshop tip today (Photoshop 6 Bible) about difficulty remembering which tool lightens and which darkens.

That little hand icon looks like it could be holding a piece of toast, and when you burn toast, it gets darker. Hand, toast, burn, darker. That other tool, the eye doctor paddle, is not holding a toast, so it must lighten. You'll never have problems again.

I never confuse those two. It could be because I've spend a lot of time in a Photo Lab when I was a kid and I know what those icons symbolize.
When you're trying to darken an area of a photo in a lab, before it gets developed, you put your hands over the photo, blocking the light from the projector over the photo paper, but leaving it to pass through the small opening between your palms. It gets exposed more than the rest of the photo, so it gets darker. You do the oposite when you need a lighter area. Make a shadow over it so it gets exposed less and it's lighter after developing and fixing.

I admit, the toast thingy is easyer to remember :)

Wow Flatline, this is very interesting. Thanks for the lesson in traditional photography!
