I often use » (or «) in order to get nice arrows in HTML (», «).
I searched for it at Google earlier today (I wanted to paste it into Photoshop, and that was the easiest way for me to find this character right away . . .), and came across an amazing site. I spent at least a minute starring at it. The site even validates!

I am currently taking a course in mathematics, "Introduction to Logic for Computer Scientists". An excerpt from the book follows. Tell me, does this have anything to do with logic? Is logic something that is supposed to drive you crazy?
A certain island is inhabited by people who either always tell the truth or always lie and who respond to questions with a yes or a no. A tourist comes to a fork in the road, where one branch leads to a restaurant and the other does not. There is no sign indicating which branch to take, but there is an islander standing at the fork. What single yes/no question can the tourist ask to find the way to the restaurant?

Yeah, yeah - I have no idea what you guys are talking about, but let me express my disappointment when (having checked the link you found) typing http://www.laquo.com in the address bar...

You can not say "A" and then not say "B"... :-)

Chriztian, Zoka was talking about the puzzle. He claims that the question should be formulated something like this:
"Would a lair tell me that the way to the restaurant is this way?" However I am not sure about that one. I still don't know if the person is a lair or a truthteller.

And, yes, I tryed laquo too! Time to purchase another domain name, and make an amazing site? I didn't bother checking if it is available, because it probably isn't.

:: Sasha, at 07:31 pm on Tuesday, 21. January 2003

"Would a lair tell me that the way to the restaurant is this way?" and then you choose oposit way.

If the person is thruthteller he knows wher is restorant and he knows that lair told you oposit way, he confirms what lair would say... that means you shoud choose oposite way.

If the person is lair, he knows where is the restorant and he knows that lair woud tel you oposit way but he stil lies you about what would lair say. That means you should go on the oposit way from the way they direct you.

As simple as that.

:: zoka, at 08:34 pm on Tuesday, 21. January 2003

Scenario 1 person is truthteller:
((+ truthteller)*(- lairs answer))*(+ tels the true) = (- answer)

scenario 2 person is lair:
((- lier)*(- liers answer))*(- lies about answer) = (- ansver)

in any case you should do posite.

If you ask "Would a truthteller tell me that the way to the restaurant is this way?"

Scenario 3 person is truthteller:
((+ truthteller)*(+ truthtellers answer))*(+ tels the true) = (+ answer)

scenario 4 person is lair:
((- lier)*(+ truthteller answer))*(- lies about answer) = (+ ansver)

Thank you Zoka for your help. I still need some time to congest this. I am a moron for math, I must admit.

:: Sasha, at 09:30 pm on Wednesday, 22. January 2003

It's an old Mensa puzzle. Usually, there are two brothers at the fork, one who tells the truth and one who lies. You don't know which is which, and the question you as is "what direction would your brother say?" You then proceed to go the other direction.

:: Brad Carps, at 12:18 pm on Monday, 27. January 2003

After I posted, I realized that I should add an example. Let's say that the fork you *want* to take is to the left. If your question went to the truth-teller, he would tell you that his lying brother would point you to the right. Go left. If you happened to speak with the liar, he would lie and say that the brother would also say right. But he's lying, so go left. The cool part about that riddle is that it doesn't matter which brother you ask. I still don't see where the math is involved, though.

I think the other poster has it wrong. He concluded to ask, "Would a lair tell me that the way to the restaurant is this way?"

Assume the left branch is correct. If you ask the liar what a liar would say if you asked him if the left way was correct, he would respond with a 'yes'. The truth-teller would answer the same question with a 'no'. This gets you nowhere.

The correct question: Would you tell me to go left if I asked you which road leads to the restaurant?

If the restaurant is on the left, both will answer yes. Otherwise, they'll say no.

I thought of a less elegant
question: ask the islander
"Is the answer to the question
'is the restaurant on the left?'
the same as the answer to the
question 'are we on a continent?'?"

:: odegaard, at 07:58 pm on Sunday, 28. August 2005

Darn, given a few minutes to think about it, I don't think my question would work!

:: odegaard, at 08:09 pm on Sunday, 28. August 2005

I have a smiliar problem- please get back to me if anyone can answer it!

You are travelling to a town and you get lost, and you come to a fork on the road you are walking on, and a person standing at the fork, you know that green men always tell the truth and red men always lie, however it is now too dark to see what colour they are. You only have time to ask them one question, what question do you ask them to know what path to take to the town you are looking for?
