Jakob Nielsen's Alertbox: The Need for Web Design Standards Users expect 77% of the simpler Web design elements to behave in a certain way. Unfortunately, confusion reigns for many higher-level design issues.

There are many good points in this article, but how did he come up with that 77 number? Is web design really so scientific? I like rules, but dislike dogma. For example, do all these principles apply equally to e-commerce, entertainment, personal, hobby websites?

OK, let's conclude, Mr. Jakob Nielsen is only 42.9% right, which means that only 33.03% of the simpler web design elements users expect to behave in a certain way.

I've never been much of a fan of Jakob Nielsen, and this doesn't change my mind.

Now, I -am- a huge of consistency and establishing best practices, but I'd much prefer chaos to everyone doing the same thing if they're all doing it wrong.

I think the work that the WHAT working group is doing will help to lessen the fragmentation eventually (provided adoption takes off), but let's face it: if the Web wasn't a forum for self-expression as much as it is an information source, CSS wouldn't exist.

People will continue to express themselves in their designs no matter how harmful it may or may not be. Likewise, companies and corporations will continue to want to have a "look" to set themselves apart from others.
